What does the 25-minute consultation cover?
The pre-procedure consultation is an important part of your care. It gives you and the clinician time to make sure the contraceptive method you have selected is suitable for your individual needs. You will have dedicated time to raise concerns and ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.
Listen to what you need
You will be able to discuss your reasons for considering a coil or implant, your current contraception and what is most important to you.
Review your health and medical history
The clinician will ask about your medical history, current medication, menstrual cycle and any relevant previous treatment.
Explain your contraception options
You will receive clear information about the available methods, how they work and how long they may provide contraception.
Discuss benefits and possible side effects
The clinician will explain the potential benefits, risks and side effects associated with your preferred method.
Check clinical suitability
Your clinician will assess whether the procedure is safe and appropriate for you. Additional information or testing may sometimes be required.
Explain the procedure
You will be told what happens during the insertion, how to prepare and what you may experience during and after the appointment.
Following the consultation, your 30-minute insertion appointment will be arranged if the clinician considers the procedure clinically appropriate.
Packages
Mirena Coil Insertion
The Mirena coil is a hormonal coil, or intrauterine system (IUS) — a small, T-shaped plastic device placed inside the womb by a trained doctor or nurse. It releases a small amount of the hormone progestogen and is more than 99% effective, providing contraception for several years.
It may also make periods lighter, shorter and less painful, and is sometimes used to treat heavy periods or as part of hormone replacement therapy.
Does not protect against STIs — condoms are recommended for STI protection.
Copper Coil Insertion
A copper coil, or intrauterine device (IUD), is a small, T-shaped device made from plastic and copper, inserted into the uterus by a specially trained healthcare professional. It is hormone-free, more than 99% effective, and provides immediate protection.
Insertion usually takes around 5–10 minutes and can remain effective for 5 to 10 years, depending on the device used. The copper coil can also be used as emergency contraception when clinically appropriate.
Effective for 5–10 years, depending on the device.
Contraceptive Implant Insertion
A small, flexible plastic rod placed under the skin of the upper arm by a trained healthcare professional. It releases the hormone progestogen and is more than 99% effective.
Fitted using a local anaesthetic, the procedure usually takes only a few minutes. Once inserted, it provides contraception for up to five years and can be removed at any time.
Provides contraception for up to five years.
Contraceptive Implant Removal
If you would like your contraceptive implant removed, our clinician will assess the implant and explain the removal procedure. The area will normally be numbed before the implant is removed through a small opening in the skin. You will also have an opportunity to discuss your future contraception needs.
