About Our Service
Our team is committed to guiding you and your loved ones through every step of the dementia assessment and diagnostic journey.
We offer immediate appointment availability with no waiting times. With same-week consultations, comprehensive assessments, and personalised treatment plans, our service provides timely, accurate, and accessible support to help you understand and manage memory concerns with confidence.
This service is led by Dr Hayder Al-Shamaa, a highly experienced GP with a special interest in dementia care. Since 2014, he has been part of the local Memory Assessment Service in East Sussex and brings nearly two decades of clinical experience to his role.
Dr Al-Shamaa works alongside a registered nurse to deliver a supportive, multidisciplinary approach to memory assessment and care.

Who might benefit from this service
While occasional memory lapses are common, persistent memory loss, confusion, or subtle changes in personality may indicate a deeper concern. Often, these shifts are first noticed by family or friends who are close to you, rather than yourself. An accurate and early diagnosis of dementia is essential. It helps individuals access the appropriate treatment, support, and guidance, enabling them to maintain their independence and well-being for as long as possible.
This service is designed for:
- Individuals experiencing ongoing memory issues
- Those with suspected dementia
- Anyone looking to better understand cognitive decline or changes in thinking
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We have the answers. If you don’t find what you are looking for, our team is happy to help during your free screening call.
Can I bring someone with me?
What if I am diagnosed with dementia?
If your memory assessment confirms a diagnosis of dementia, our clinical team will take time to explain the type of dementia, what it means for you, and the treatment options available. To ensure treatment is initiated safely and without delay, one of our GPs will issue private prescriptions and oversee your medication during the initial phase.
During this period, we will provide close clinical supervision, carefully monitoring your response and adjusting the dosage as needed to ensure you are comfortable and stable on your treatment. Once your condition is well-managed, and with your full consent, we will prepare a clinical summary and liaise with your NHS GP to request a seamless transition of your ongoing prescriptions into NHS care.
We’ll also support you and your family with care planning, advice, and referrals to local services.
Can memory problems get better?
Some causes of memory problems are treatable or reversible. Others, like dementia, are progressive but can be managed with the right support and strategies.
